“A garden is not a place, it’s a journey”, and Pune is one of the best places to begin this journey. The green city has many gardening enthusiasts. In Pune, practically every home has plants! There’s something magical about taking care of plants. A sense of relaxation and connection to nature is one of the purest emotions one can experience. We may think we are nurturing the garden and plants but in reality it’s the garden that is nurturing us.

As you can imagine the sheer number of small nurseries in Pune is far too many for me to cover in my article, sharing below some of my favourite nurseries to pick up plants. Happy Gardening!

Old Airport Road Nursery

This is not a single store, but a line of small nurseries by the roadside. Frequented by a lot of plant and gardening enthusiasts, you can get a wide variety of plants here. Evenings on weekdays and weekends here get the most footfall.

There are a lot of flowering plants available here, including Bougainvillaea, Marigolds, Roses, Periwinkle and even the gorgeous Petunias (when in season of course!) If you are looking for a particular colour of flower or plant, you can scout the different nurseries and pick the one that steals your heart.

The store owners here do not use the scientific names of the plants, the colloquial names are most popular here. There is a decent variety of pots and planters available here. The fibre / plastic pots and the earthen pots have a good range but the ceramic planters have dominance in this market. There are so many to choose from! You will also be able to pick up earthen wind chimes, ceramic candle holders and diffusers and a few interesting artefacts here.

The prices in this market are very reasonable and you will be able to buy a lot of plants even with limited budgets. If you’ve been mulling over getting a plant, I would say this is the best place to try your hands at gardening without hurting your pockets.

There are several shops lined here, hence linking the directions to one of them. This is basically if you keep going straight from Poona Golf Course towards the airport road (crossing the wall of Yerwada Jail). You cannot miss these shops as you keep going straight from the Poona Club Golf Course.

Jagtap Nursery

Jagtap Nursery at Magarpatta is one of the oldest and most prominent nurseries in Pune. It was founded by the patriarch of the family Mr. Ramrao Jagtap over 50 years ago, this nursery has grown leaps and bounds since their humble beginnings.

Mr. Ramrao Jagtap, was a renowned chemistry scientist at the National Chemical Laboratories (NCL) with a passionate hobby for gardening. The roses of his garden were literally “neighbours envy and owner’s pride” kind of a situation. The Parsi community is known for their love of gardening amongst other things and the Parsis living in his neighbourhood encouraged Mr. Ramrao to sell the “rose cuttings”. In 1968, Mr. Ramrao decided to turn his hobby into his profession and he along with his wife Mrs. Chandralekha Jagtap founded the nursery and turned it into a full fledged commercial nursery in 1975. There has been no looking back since! It is now a family run business where other members of the family play major roles and are taking the business to new heights.

Jagtap Nursery indeed, is a great place for picking up your plant babies. A one stop shop to get both indoor and outdoor plants. They have a fantastic variety of plants of all kinds. You can pick up succulents, flowering plants, kitchen garden plants and herbs, even citrus fruit tree saplings. They have a lot of orchids for those looking for them. It’s hard to go here and walk out without a plant. There’s something for everyone – those with a green thumb or novices. The staff here are very knowledgeable and give you guidance on what plants will do well in your surroundings of full sunlight, partial sunlight, shade etc.

The section behind the billing counter has cute items to beautify your outdoor space whether it’s a humble balcony or a majestic garden. They also have a wide selection of pots, watering cans, decorative items, gardening tools, and seeds of exotic plants. They also have potting soil / mixes and fertilisers for all kinds of plants. Ironically, you can also find artificial grass here!!

As you walk around their nursery, you will come across benches, garden swings, canopies and other garden furniture made out of wood, stone and fibre. The selection on these items though is limited.

For a fee they even pot the plants for you. They also have a section on artificial plants for home and office decor. They have few parking slots outside the store but if those are occupied parking can become an issue. In that case I suggest you go and park in Seasons Mall and walk up. All plants are tagged with their scientific names, Google it or ask the helpful garden assistants around. Some plants are expensive, look at the price tags. Try to go before sundown else like all green places mosquitoes become a menace.

I believe they also provide landscape development and professional maintenance services as well. While they have a website and online shop, I found no products listed to sell, just a couple of blogs. Nonetheless, I have listed their details, if you are unable to visit, perhaps you could reach out and check if they can deliver. But really, nothing beats a personal visit to the nursery.
